Chief Mountain Klippe panorama, Glacier National Park, Montana.
Chief Mountain, the peak on the far right (east) side of this photo consists of Precambrian sedimentary rock that resides in the upper plate of the Lewis Thrust. The mountains behind Chief Mountain also consist of Precambrian sedimentary rock above the fault. Below the fault are Cretaceous rocks. Erosion, however, has removed much of the Precambrian rock from around Chief Mountain so that it stands alone by itself, away from the rest of the rangefront. An isolated block of upper plate material along any fault is called a klippe.
